Now that the kids are back in school, it’s the perfect opportunity to take some time for yourself.  Give your skin the TLC it needs by peeling away the damaging signs of summer on your skin. Autumn is the time to start thinking about repairing aging sun damage during those long summer days.  Free yourself from those pesky lines and wrinkles!

The best way to begin is by an intense exfoliation done with either a chemical peel and/or microdermabrasion.  Both treatments take the top layers of dead and dying skin cells off, causing a stimulation of new skin cells.  By removing the dead layer and replacing it with new cells you are also removing acne scars, age spots and damage in the epidermis.

Microdermabrasion is a mild manual exfoliation, using a diamond tip wand to gently abrade the skin cells off and then suction them away. There is no downtime or discomfort with microdermabrasion.  Your skin will be left softer, smoother, brighter and younger looking.  The level of intensity and depth will be determined by your needs.

Chemical peels are solutions painted onto the face to breakdown the glue that holds the dead skin cells together.  Different solutions allow for greater penetration, giving various depths of treatment.  Chemical peels treat fine lines, wrinkles, sun spots or pigmented areas, rosacea, acne and acne scars, and improve overall skin tone and texture.

When combined, these two give even greater results as a two-part skin-invigorating treatment: the mild microderm done before a chemical peel allows for greater penetration and increased youthfulness and glow.  Both treatments are best done in a series to encourage optimal cell turnover.  They should be done a minimum of 2-4 weeks apart.

Treatments for sun damaged skin

Say Goodbye To Age Spots and Sun Damage

Sun damaged skin is best treated with IPL, or intense pulsed light.  IPL actually reverses previous skin damage by using light based energy to go deep into the skin to target unwanted pigment and vascular imperfections.  The light is absorbed by the unwanted pigment and then sloughs away over the following days.  Your skin will have a more even tone, color and texture.

IPL is a safe and non-invasive treatment that is tailored to your needs.  The IPL can be used on any parts of the body to treat your face, neck, chest, hands, back, arms or legs, ridding you of sun damage and clearing acne and rosacea.

The number of treatments you would require would depend on the type of treatment.  For example, sun damage responds to one treatment, but is best done with a series of three treatments.  Acne and rosacea both require twice-weekly treatments for several weeks and then only periodically.

Healing after an IPL treatment is minimal.  The day of treatment you may have a little redness like sunburn and the next may see darkening of freckles and sunspots, both resolving within days.

And Hell-o Botox

Actually, in our office we use another neuromodulator called Dysport, which is similar to Botox but produces faster results and lasts slightly longer.  Both Botox and Dysport use neuromodulators or neurotoxins, otherwise known as botulinum toxin A, to work on muscles in motion.  This treats lines and wrinkles that are caused by facial expression, and results include looking more relaxed, rested and more youthful.

There are several neuromodulators on the market in the United States: Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin.  They all work the same way by turning off the ability of the neurotransmitter to fire.  This results in the muscle not hearing the message to contract.  Neuromodulators are naturally occurring and are a very safe medicine that clears the body in 4 hours.  The body repairs the nerve ending and the muscle regains its ability to contact again, but results of a youthful complexion remain for anywhere from 3-6 months.  Repeated treatments help the lines and wrinkles relax and disappear.  Neuromodulators are used also used to treat sweating in armpits, soles, and palms, TMJ pain, migraine and tension headaches, and neck pain.
