Chelation Therapy and Heavy Metal Toxicity

What is Chelation Therapy?

Chelation Therapy (pronounced key-lation) is the primary treatment for heavy metal toxicity. Various natural occurring compounds that bind to heavy metals are administered either intravenously or orally, depending on the severity and type of heavy metal toxicity. Heavy metals are then excreted out of the body through the urine.

What health conditions is Chelation Therapy used for?

Chelation Therapy is prescribed for heavy metal toxicity, such as mercury, lead and cadmium. Heavy metal toxicity is strongly associated with poor concentration, poor memory, poor muscle coordination, high blood pressure, fatigue, depression and heart disease.

How many treatments will I need until I feel better?

The dosage and number of treatments required is strongly related to the severity of the toxicity. The person's own nutritional status and overall well-being will also be a factor. In many situations, patients will alternate between chelation therapy and nutritive IV therapy to reduce mineral deficiencies that can result from the chelation process.

What can I expect when I come in for an appointment?

If you are new to the Center, your initial appointment is one hour, during which time one of our doctors on staff will discuss the following with you:

  • Current symptoms
  • Current medications, both prescribed and over-the-counter
  • Current nutritional supplements
  • Current diet, exercise and sleep habits
  • Past and/or current lab results
  • Major body systems.

At the end of your visit, you will receive recommendations in one or more of the following areas to enhance the elimination of heavy metals and to restore normal body movement:

  • Supplements
  • Foods to Avoid
  • Stress-Reducing Exercises
  • Lab Testing
  • Adjunctive Therapies

Your initial chelation therapy will be given when your doctor obtains the necessary lab tests and a diagnosis of heavy metal toxicity is confirmed. If you already have been diagnosed with heavy metal toxicity by another physician, please bring with you copies of all relevant lab tests.
